According to Carol Dweck, a researcher on human motivation, we use two basic mindsets to navigate life: fixed and growth. A fixed mindset believes in static traits and talent as the key to achievement. On the other hand, a growth mindset involves hard work and zeal for continuous improvement, which is more correlated with success. While on an expedition to reevaluate his outlook on life, Jim Becker came across this exploration by Carol Dweck that changed his life for the better.
When Jim founded his 3PL company Becker Logistics in 1997, his hopes were high, and his enthusiasm was through the roof. There was only one thing on his mind: success. Jim worked like a Roman to ensure his company would prosper, and so it did. By 2009 the company reached a gross revenue of $3.5 million. Henceforth, the company was expected to boom with profits. However, Jim’s world turned upside down when his two-year-old daughter, Jenna, passed away that same year.
Jim started to spend his days in fear of failure. His apprehension and lack of trust in his abilities made it hard for him to sleep, yet alone Jim said he was hyping his fear and his fear of failure which stopped him from his true self expression. He would agonize himself by expecting the worst to happen. However, soon Jim Becker realized this mindset did not do justice to him or anyone around him. Hence, he decided to change. From that day onwards, Jim pledged to live his life fearlessly and to make use of all the possibilities the world had to offer. “Now as I look back on who was making those choices/decisions, who I was Being gave me who I was in that moment. Who I am now I am being someone indifferent. This is an endless world of expansion in this thing I call existence,” says Jim.
He started by setting up a vision and a goal for his company to reach a gross revenue of $100 million by 2021. Secondly, being a natural-born leader, Jim Becker decided to preach the significance of evolving into a growth mindset and so much more. Not only did Becker accomplish these two objectives, but he surpassed his expectations by reaching monumental heights of success. Becker Logistics not only met the $100 million goal, but exceeded it in 2022 by $76.9 million.
Jim Becker’s success story soon made rounds throughout the United States and Canada, reaching the Top 100 transportation brokers in North America. All eyes were on Becker Logistics as Jim shared with the world one of the focal reasons for his success: mindset.
Jim started looking for ways to promote the idea of fostering a growth mindset, especially amongst young entrepreneurs. He was of the view that the way we think about ourselves and our abilities shapes our lives. This allowed him to speak into others listenings which assisted them in developing a positive outlook on learning.
If it weren’t for Jim Becker, many would have hesitated to tap into their true potential, viewing mistakes as opportunities for growth, and accepting setbacks as a part of the learning process, not doing it for self, doing it where all things matter and each person matters. This gives Jim a sense of disappearing himself.
