Kendrick Tilghman is a popular national Disc Jockey in the Randallstown area of Baltimore, Maryland. He is commonly referred to as DJ 5 Starr and is the CEO of 5 Starr Enterprise.
“So we were all in high school at the time we had a little dance group and I just was like I’m not, I’m not a dancer but I liked this. Baltimore club music was very, very popular in the 90s and it’s still going worldwide, and I just appreciate the art. What it takes to make music, but my addiction became with the craft, to be able to scratch the song to where it doesn’t get on anybody’s nerves, but you still complement the music and the way it’s supposed to be complimented.”
Soulful Symphony comprises a 75-piece American symphony orchestra and is based in Kendrick’s hometown, Baltimore. It was founded in 2000 by Darin Atwater, and most of the members are African American or Latino. Being part of this orchestra, and being able to play with the prestigious Soulful Symphony is so far the highlight of Kendricks’ DJ career.
“The highlight of my DJ Career is when I performed with the Soulful Symphony. If you can imagine me, in my tuxedo and bowtie scratching sounds to complement 77 other instruments. There is no better feeling. This experience allowed me to identify my passion.”
The focus of Kendrick’s business is to provide DJ services and create fantastic musical experiences for various social events. He ventured into DJing as a young man and today is a successful DJprener who has stepped up his game to be a one-of-a-kind STEM DJ. Being highly passionate about education and having a degree in computer and engineering, Kendrick decided to mix both his passions to be a STEM DJ.
“How we figured we would solve the problem is that on a world platform the United States is like 30th when it comes to science, technology engineering, and math and I said whoa wait a minute! When I scratch that record that is physics, that’s kinetic energy, that’s friction. Oh, my goodness I’m a tell these kids because they look up to me cuz I know how to scratch and make some records together and I became the stem DJ. I found a way to combine my engineering degree with me, being a professional DJ, and then boom I started doing edutainment workshops exposing the science in the DJ industry.”
Kendrick’s DJ career is quite inspiring and motivating as he is not just any regular DJ. there is so much more to him that makes him truly a star.
