Sober, classic, reassuring, simple, timeless: ‘Classic Blue’, codename ‘PANTONE 19-4052’ will be the colour of 2020, the highly visible thread that will tie clothes, accessories and design objects, the ‘must-have’ of the season. This was decided by the Pantone Color Institute, the U.S. company specializing in colour classification and cataloguing: “In these difficult times, as we move into a new decade, the Pantone Color Institute has gone back in time,” said Laurie Pressman, vice president of global colour consulting, trend analysis and colour analysis. “Color is an anchor that offers stability, consistency and connection.
The Pantone Color Institute’s 2020 Gradation Decision
Similar to navy blue, close to indigo, brighter than navy blue, versatile, it announces itself as a new primary colour, a neutral to match with many other colours, suitable for all occasions, from the most every day to the red carpet. Classic Blue evokes a feeling of infinity: “It is an elegant shade of blue in its simplicity – the U.S. company says – it is evocative, like the sky at dusk, it stimulates reflection and highlights the desire for a reliable and stable base as we cross the threshold into a new era. Pantone’s Color of the Year series celebrates 20 years: it began in 1999, on the threshold of the new millennium. That year, as a symbolic colour of the year 2000, Pantone had chosen another shade of blue, the ‘Cerulean’, bright and soothing in response to the excitement and anxiety that accompanied the entrance in the 2000s. And like the Cerulean, Classic Blue is also a symbol of confidence in the future and hope.
